Jets sign kicker Dan Carpenter, cut Billy Cundiff

The New York Jets have signed Dan Carpenter to briefly compete with Nick Folk, and have released Billy Cundiff ... who briefly competed with Nick Folk.

Jason Miller

The New York Jets signed placekicker Dan Carpenter and released fellow kicker Billy Cundiff on Tuesday, according to the team's official website. Cundiff was signed four weeks ago to compete with incumbent Nick Folk, and though he converted on all of his preseason field goal and extra point attempts, he was released.

Folk has converted on two of his three field goal attempts thus far, with his miss being a 39-yarder against the New York Giants. That one sailed wide right, but his two converted field goals were from 51 and 54 yards, respectively. He definitely bested Cundiff in leg strength, even if he did have that miss.

With the Miami Dolphins in 2012, Carpenter connected on 14 of 22 field goal attempts, including five from 50-plus yards. He is a former Pro Bowler and should legitimately compete with Folk, but it seems unlikely he'll be able to make an impression in such a short amount of time.

The Jets will have to cut down their roster to 53 players after the fourth preseason game, so Carpenter would have to be very impressive to win the job at this point. However, Carpenter has been more consistent than Folk in recent seasons, so it should be interesting.
