Steelers will likely activate Heath Miller from PUP list by Saturday

The Steelers are planning to activate Heath Miller from the PUP prior to Saturday’s deadline, but there is still no timetable for his return from knee surgery.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers will likely activate tight end Heath Miller from the Active/PUP list, per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They have until Saturday afternoon to do so, when the final 53-man rosters are announced.

Miller missed all of training camp and preseason after tearing his ACL, MCL and PCL last December. The Steelers are hoping that he will avoid the regular season PUP, which would keep him out of the first six weeks. He is still unlikely to be ready to play in Week 1.

The Steelers are thin at the tight end position right now. Matt Spaeth was expected to start in Miller's place, but he's out indefinitely after undergoing Lisfranc surgery. David Paulson, David Johnson and Jamie McCoy are the only healthy tight ends on the depth chart. Those three are likely competing for one roster spot if Miller comes off the PUP and Spaeth goes on injury reserve/designated to return.
