NFL roster cuts: Lions trim roster to 75 players

Detroit released five players on Tuesday, including Kickalicious.

The Detroit Lions completed their final moves of the first round of cuts on Tuesday, releasing five players to trim their roster to 75 players.

Detroit began slowly cutting the roster down more than a week ago. They made nine moves over the weekend, leaving the roster at 80 players. In order to get to the NFL mandate of 75 players by the 4 p.m. ET deadline, Detroit released cornerback DeQuan Menzie, wide receiver Terrence Austin, tight end Cameron Morrah, tight end Matt Veldman and kicker Havard Rugland.

The 28-year-old Rugland is known by some as "Kickalicious" after he starred in a YouTube trick-shot video, which led to him getting a shot in the NFL. Rugland made all three field goal attempts in the preseason, including one of 50 yards, but Detroit opted to go with veteran David Akers instead.

By releasing Morrah and Veldman, Detorit now has three tight ends on the roster. Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler top the depth chart while undrafted rookie Joseph Fauria is the current No. 3. The 26-year-old Morrah flashed solid receiving skills in college and early in his career with Seattle. He's been hampered by injuries, however, and was released by San Francisco earlier this offseason.
