Cowboys could start Doug Free, Ron Leary at guard

Dallas may enter this season with an offensive line that only has about one season of combined experience at each positions. Jerry Jones doesn’t seem worried about it.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on Wednesday that the team may start Doug Free and Ron Leary at guard this season, beginning with its Week 1 matchup against the Giants. Free, a seven-year veteran at tackle, played his first career game at guard just last week. Leary is in his second season and was only active for one game last year, in which he did not play.

It is possible that at four of the five offensive line positions, Dallas will have a combined one career start.

If Free starts at guard, that would leave Jermey Parnell as the starting right tackle. He has one career start. The starting center will be rookie Travis Frederick, the Cowboys first-round draft pick this year. Left tackle Tyron Smith will be the most experienced at his position by far, with his 31 career starts, however many of those came at right tackle during his rookie season in 2011.

Jones doesn’t appear too worried. He said that Free’s debut at right guard was “nothing short of amazing.”
