Tom Crabtree injury: Buccaneers TE carted off the field

Crabtree is out with a right ankle injury and will not return to the game.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Tom Crabtree left Thursday night's preseason game against the Washington Redskins in the first half after suffering a right ankle injury. He'll be sidelined for the remainder of the final preseason game, the team announced.

Crabtree went down in the first quarter of the game, holding his lower leg. Trainers briefly went onto the field to help the tight end, but he had to be carted off.

The Buccaneers are already thin at tight end, making the injury especially unfortunate. The presumptive starter, Luke Stocker, has been nursing a calf injury during training camp. Crabtree was battling Stocker for the starting tight end spot, but figured to have a role in the offense regardless through two tight-end sets.

Tampa Bay head coach Greg Schiano spoke fondly about Crabtree during training camp:

“He (Crabtree) is a football guy. He knows it and he loves it. He works hard. There are some things he doesn’t do great, but we will work around that.”

Crabtree played for the Green Bay Packers last season before signing with the Buccaneers in March.
