James Casey injury: Eagles TE out with hamstring injury

Casey left the field under his own power, but will not return to the game.

USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Eagles tight end James Casey left Thursday night's preseason finale against the New York Jets with a hamstring injury, the team announced.

Both the timing and severity of Casey’s injury are presently unknown. He was able to walk to the locker room with trainers under his own power after seemingly tweaking something, but will not return to the game.

Casey signed with the Eagles this offseason after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Houston Texans. The tight end missed some of the offseason after having his knee scoped, making this the latest setback in his brief Philly career.

Luckily the Eagles have solid depth at the tight end position. Casey figures to slot behind Brent Celek and rookie Zach Ertz on the depth chart after those two claimed most of the playing time during preseason.

Philadelphia’s offense featured its tight ends heavily throughout the preseason, so Casey appears in line for some targets this year if healthy. He also played fullback during his time in Houston, giving Chip Kelly some positional flexibility to work with.
