Andre Brown injury: Giants RB fractures leg

Brown fractured his leg late in the second quarter of the final preaseason game.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants running back Andre Brown fractured his leg during Thursday's preseason finale against the New England Patriots, the team announced.

Brown injured his left leg late in the second quarter, slowly limping off the field before heading straight towards the locker room. The fifth-year pro underwent X-rays later, which confirmed the injury.

David Wilson and Brown were expected to share running back duties for the Giants this season after Ahmad Bradshaw left in the summer for the Indianapolis Colts. Now Wilson will presumably be the go-to guy for the time being.

Brown emerged for the Giants in Week 3 last season, rushing 113 yards and two touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers. He rushed for 385 yards and eight touchdowns before breaking the same leg in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers.

It was a little surprising to see Brown still in the game late in the second quarter, since he figures to have a key role for New York this year. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said before the game that the starting offense would play roughly 12-15 plays against New England. Brown clarified those statements, telling Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News that the starters needed to score in their final preseason game:

“Those 12-15 plays gotta be crisp and on point. We’ve got to produce a score at the end of it. Whatever it is, however we punch it in, we’ve just gotta make sure we’re crisp.”

The Giants trailed the Patriots at halftime, 14-10.
