Seneca Wallace to be released by 49ers, per report

San Francisco will not play the veteran quarterback tonight and will put him back on the free agent market after a short stint with the team.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

The 49ers will release quarterback Seneca Wallace and won't play him on Thursday against the Chargers, according to Matt Barrows. Wallace was not with the team for very long, having signed with San Francisco just seven days ago.

Wallace did not play last season and was signed by the Saints in the offseason in an effort to reboot his career, but New Orleans released him after some subpar preseason performances. The 49ers are looking for more competition for Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien as the backup to Colin Kaepernick, but apparently Wallace did not do enough to impress during his week with the team.

Wallace last played with the Browns in 2011, playing in six games and making three starts. He was drafted out of Iowa State by the Seahawks in 2003 and refused to switch to wide receiver, insisting that he could play quarterback at the professional level. Though he made just 21 career starts with Seattle and Cleveland, if this is the end of his career it is notable that he managed to stick around for over a decade.
