Steelers wearing throwback uniforms vs. Lions this year

Did you like the Steelers’ bumblebee uniforms last year? You’re in luck! They’re breaking them out again against the Lions this season.

Justin K. Aller

Everybody loves NFL throwback uniforms, but some are more divisive than others. The Pittsburgh Steelers, for example, unveiled the beauties depicted above last season to commemorate the franchise's 80th anniversary. They wore them in two games against the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens and, for better or worse, it was quite a sight to behold.

The Steelers are bringing the bumblebee uniforms back this season, too, though it will be for just one game -- against the Detroit Lions on Nov. 7. The uniforms allegedly date back to 1934, though there is no confirmation whether or not they were stolen from a prison chain gang.

For the record, Paul Lukas of Uni Watch loves the uniforms precisely because they are so absurd and gaudy:

It’s not exactly a secret that I love stripes, so it’s probably no surprise to most of you that I totally dig the throwbacks that the Steelers unveiled yesterday. Loud? You bet. Borderline ugly? Arguably, but they stay on the proper side of that border. I wouldn’t want them to wear this every game, but I love it - love it - as a one- or two-game alternate. It’s a dynamite history lesson, and all those stripes on the field are gonna look f****** amazing. Kudos to the team for having the guts to do something this bold.

What do football fans think? Is it a charming throwback to a simpler time when the NFL was still figuring out fashion or an unholy eyesore designed to make HD screens melt?

Sound off in the comments.
