Lions vs. Bills: Matt Leinart terrible as Detroit cruises to victory

Detroit looked good on Thursday, but they were helped by the ineffectiveness of Matt Leinart.

Rick Stewart

The Detroit Lions beat the Buffalo Bills, 35-13, to close out the preseason at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Thursday night.

Detroit looked excellent, showcasing its depth and making things look very easy against a Buffalo team. Matt Leinart started the game for the Bills and was truly awful, completing just three of his 10 passes for 11 yards and firing a pair of interceptions.

Matt Warren of Buffalo Rumblings discussed his thoughts on the Bills’ quarterback situation:

Matt Leinart had a stat line only Bluto could love, finishing with a 0.0 passer rating and two interceptions after getting the start for the Bills. Thaddeus Lewis was better, passing for 116 yards and a touchdown. On a related note, E.J. Manuel threw passes in shorts before the game and did not walk with a limp while Jeff Tuel was held out of the game to protect him from injury.

Speaking of horrible quarterback play, the only blemish on the Lions' night was Matthew Stafford. The former No. 1 pick went 1-for-6 and also threw an interception. Theo Riddick stood out on the positive side of things for Detroit, catching two touchdown passes and making plays when called upon.

Over at Pride of Detroit, Sean Yuille points out another nice performance came from wide receiver Matt Willis:

Willis is making it really difficult for the Lions release him. It remains to be seen if they will keep five wide receivers, but Willis strengthened his case for a roster spot on Thursday with a diving catch for 39 yards. He also nearly had a ridiculous 28-yard touchdown, but he was only able to get one foot down inbounds.

The worst part of the night were the injuries continuing to pile up for the Bills, however, as Guard Doug Legursky was carted off with a lower body injury and Brad Smith left with a rib issue.
