Browns vs. Bears: Hoyer ‘outstanding’ in win

The Browns completed a 3-1 preseason by beating the Bears in the Windy City.

Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns emerged victorious over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, 18-16, on Thursday night to close out the exhibition schedule.

Cleveland withheld both Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden, giving Brian Hoyer a full four quarters to prove he belongs on an NFL roster. Hoyer came through despite tossing two interceptions, completing 24 of 35 passes for 307 yards and a touchdown.

Chris Pokorny of Dawgs By Nature talked about Hoyer’s showing and what it means going forward to the Browns if Weeden and Campbell were to get hurt:

Statistically, Hoyer finished the game completing 24-of-35 passes for 307 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. It really was an outstanding game for Hoyer; his two interceptions weren’t poor decisions by any means.

Chicago gave us a look at both Trent Edwards and Jordan Palmer behind center, getting some decent results. Behind them, running back Michael Ford was a legit bright spot with nine carries for 48 yards. Wide receiver Terrence Toliver also showed well, making six catches for 49 yards on six targets.

Over at Windy City Gridiron, Steven Schweickert focused more on the defense. Schweickert mentions the difference in schemes between old and new defensive coordinators :

Mel Tucker loves his blitzes; at least more than Lovie and Rod ran. J.T. Thomas picked up a sack on an interior blitz, and Hurst's been getting a few of those calls that he's capitalized on. It's certainly going to be a more active defense. Whether that translates to better, well, remains to be seen.

The Bears open the season against the Cincinnati Bengals while the Browns face the Miami Dolphins.
