Robert Meachem injury: Chargers WR has concussion

The injury adds a wrinkle to San Diego’s roster-cut decisions Saturday.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Robert Meachem suffered a concussion Thursday in the team's preseason finale, according to Michael Gehlken of UTSanDiego.com.

Meachem will now have to wait to see if he makes it past the final rounds of roster cuts, which must be made by 6 p.m. ET Saturday. Meachem is already guaranteed $5 million this season that would be paid in full even if he is cut Saturday, according to Gehlken.

If Meachem is cut while injured, he could file an injury grievance, Gehlken said. But he’ll already get paid for the remainder of his contract in full, so such a grievance would be unlikely. The Chargers may also choose to put Meachem on injured reserve, thus getting him off the 53-man roster without cutting him.

Meachem was taken by the Saints with the 27th overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft out of Tennessee. His best season to date was 2009, when he caught 45 passes for 722 yards and nine touchdowns.
