Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Lawrence Tynes was placed on the non-football injury list after he and teammate Carl Nicks contracted staph infections.

The non-football injury list is designated for injuries unrelated to football (or can be used for injuries carrying over from other football leagues, like if a player carries over a major injury from college). In essence, placing Tynes on the NFI list is the Buccaneers’ way of saying the infection was not their fault.
No corresponding move was made with regard to Nicks.
Tynes signed with the Buccaneers as a free agent this offseason. He had spent the past five seasons with the New York Giants. He made a career-high 33 field goals last season.
