The Eagles have given up on Danny Watkins, releasing the former first-round pick after just two seasons.

Watkins was drafted by the Eagles with the 23rd overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He was considered one of the safest picks in the draft, but struggled badly in his two seasons with the team, grading out 53rd out of 79 guards last season on Pro Football Focus. He was one of the biggest reasons Michael Vick ran for his life in 2012 and lost his starting job to Jake Scott, finishing the season on the inactive list.
The Eagles drafted right tackle Lane Johnson with the fourth overall pick this season, pushing Todd Herremans to right guard and leaving Watkins without a position, making him expendable. He may go down as one of the biggest draft busts in franchise history.
