The Geno Smith era in may be starting earlier than expected. Manish Mehta of the Daily News reports that the New York Jets will start Smith over Mark Sanchez in the regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jets leaning towards starting Geno Smith Week 1, according to report
Geno Smith is expected to be the Week 1 starter, but reports indicate that the Jets may stick with him longer than that.

Although Ryan reportedly wanted to stick with Sanchez as the starter, this latest report says that he’s on board with general manager John Idzik on moving on to Smith. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is saying that he would start Smith even if Sanchez is healthy. Sanchez suffered a shoulder injury in the third preseason game and is unlikely to be ready for Week 1.
Smith struggled badly in his preseason start against the New York Giants and was dealing with an ankle injury in training camp, but the Jets are apparently ready to roll with him as the starter regardless. Matt Simms and Graham Harrell are the other quarterbacks on the depth chart after Greg McElroy was released on Saturday.
