Broncos roster cuts 2013: Tavarres King, Ryan Lilja, 16 others cut

Tavarres King, a fifth-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, was among the players cut by the Denver Broncos on Saturday.

USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos announced 22 roster moves on Saturday, cutting the roster down from 75 to 53. Two of the more notable moves included the release of offensive lineman Ryan Lilja and rookie wide receiver Tavarres King.

Running back Lance Ball, center/guard C.J. Davis, running back Jeremiah Johnson and tight end Jake O'Connell joined Lilja as released veterans and therefore they're not subject to the waiver wire.

Joining King on waivers will be defensive end Jeremy Beal, center/guard Philip Blake, tackle Paul Cornick, defensive tackles Romney Fuga and Ben Garland, cornerback Aaron Hester, linebacker Damien Holmes, tackle Vinston Painter, safety Ross Rasner, wide receivers Gerell Robinson and Lamaar Thomas and defensive end John Youboty.

Bronco Mike of SB Nation’s Broncos blog Mile High Report considered the release of King to be the most surprising of the team’s roster moves on Saturday:

We can now say Elway may keep us on our toes as 5th round WR Tavarres King was waived. I thought he’d stick. A bit curious the Broncos would keep only 4 true WR. Then again, the 4th and 5th WR’s last year had 26 targets total. They do not matter much in a Manning offense. Even if one of the three starters goes down, Caldwell provides adequate depth both in the slot and on the outside.

The Broncos also announced linebackers Stewart Bradley and Lerentee McCray, as well as rookie defensive end Quanterus Smith, were placed on injured reserve. Linebacker Von Miller was designated as reserve/suspended and will not count against the team's 53-player limit until he returns following his six-game suspension.
