Blaine Gabbert may have won Jaguars QB job with offseason work

Blaine Gabbert has had a rough start to his NFL career, but he may be getting a second chance in 2013 with a brand new coaching staff.

USA TODAY Sports

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert is entering a make-or-break year after two poor seasons in the NFL, but he's not expected to lose the starting job. CBS Sports' Pete Prisco believes that Gabbert has already won the gig despite the presence of veteran Chad Henne.

Gabbert started ahead of Henne during the Jaguars’ scrimmage on Saturday night. He had some good moments, but still struggled with missed throws. Thing is, Henne did little to distinguish himself either, so Jacksonville will have to settle one way or the other.

Despite his struggles, Gabbert is still only 23 years old and has a new coaching staff to work with. Head coach Gus Bradley says that he didn’t have any preconceived notions about his young quarterback, and used the offseason as a clean slate for Gabbert. From CBS Sports:

“I didn’t listen to too many things,” Bradley said. “I asked our whole staff to make judgments based on what we saw on film, meeting him in person. That’s what we tried to do. We just wanted to add on to what they already did. We did some analytical work. We pieced together what may have happened. Now we are going forward to try and make the corrections. I think Blaine had like a week off this summer. The guy loves football and really wants it. That’s what we want, spirited guys who love the game.”

Gabbert also has new weapons to work with in Denard Robinson and Ace Sanders, plus a healthy Maurice Jones-Drew and a revamped offensive line featuring No. 2 pick Luke Joeckel. His struggles and weaknesses are well-documented, but it's becoming clear that the new coaches and front office have tried to put him in a position to succeed and want him to sink or swim on his own merits.
