Raiders training camp: QB Tyler Wilson ‘behind from a mental standpoint’, says head coach

Tyler Wilson is having a rough go of it at training camp, and coach Dennis Allen admits that his mental game needs to improve.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen admits that rookie quarterback Tyler Wilson has a lot of work to do. Allen told Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle that Wilson "has all the physical tools but is behind from a mental standpoint." He went on to say that the rookie is "throwing the ball pretty well, it's just a matter of figuring out where it's supposed to go."

Wilson, a fourth round pick, had a nice performance in OTAs but is struggling in training camp so far. He started off on the third team behind Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor, but has since lost third-team reps to UDFA Matt McGloin.

At the moment, it’s looking like a certainty that Flynn will be the Week 1 starter, with Pryor entrenched as his main backup. The Raiders have four quarterbacks right now and probably won’t carry all four on the 53-man roster. The depth chart may not be settled until the end of preseason, but if Wilson continues to struggle, a practice squad stint isn’t out of the question.
