Tyler Wilson falls behind at Raiders training camp

Wilson is down to No. 4 on Oakland’s quarterback depth chart.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Oakland Raiders rookie quarterback Tyler Wilson is struggling with the mental aspect of the NFL game and has fallen to fourth on the depth chart, per Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Well, I think he’s got the physical tools,” head coach Dennis Allen said of Wilson after Sunday’s practice. “I think he’s behind from a mental part of the game, and that’s where he’s got to continue to work to improve.”

The Raiders selected Wilson in the fourth round of April's NFL Draft, and there was immediately some talk of the rookie potentially pushing for the starting job in Oakland. But as it stands, he's losing out on reps to veterans Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor and fellow rookie Matt McGloin, who went undrafted in April. As Levi Damien of Silver and Black Pride points out, cutting Wilson's snaps in training camp could be a motivational tactic employed by Allen.

As for Wilson, he has not been terrible and it is hard to say exactly what he is or is not doing that has the coaches giving his reps to McGloin. Allen has used several tactics to motivate players and this could very well be the tactic he is using to put a fire under Wilson.

Wilson was a standout QB at Arkansas, leading the SEC in yards per game in 2011 and ‘12. Last season, he completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 3,387 yards, 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Over the course of his career in Fayetteville, he had a 62.6 percent completion percentage, 52 TDs and 26 INTs.
