Saints sign Steve Breaston to 1-year contract

New Orleans is adding another target in the passing game.

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

The New Orleans Saints are set to sign free agent wide receiver Steve Breaston, as first reported by Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. The deal is for one year, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

More on the Saints: Canal Street Chronicles

Breaston is entering his seventh NFL season, having played the last two with the Kansas City Chiefs. In 2012, he played in 10 games and caught just seven passes for 74 yards. However, in 60 games over the previous four years, he averaged 60.0 receptions for 805.3 yards and 2.3 touchdowns per season.

Even though Breaston's production fell off a cliff last year, he'll be in a much better situation to make an impact with the Saints. The Chiefs' quarterback play was awful, ranking last in the NFL with 169.6 passing yards per game and 31st in the league with a 63.8 passer rating. The combination of Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn simply wasn't good enough. The two quarterbacks combined for eight touchdown passes and 20 interceptions.

In New Orleans, Breaston will be joining the NFL’s top passing attack. Last season, the Saints led the league with 312.3 passing yards per game and 43 touchdowns through the air.
