Vince Young signs 1-year deal with Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers have a new backup quarterback, two-time Pro Bowler Vince Young.

Following a day of rumors the Packers have a new quarterback in Vince Young. The team reached an agreement with the former top-5 pick on a one year deal, after working him out in Green Bay on Monday.

Young hasn't taken a regular season snap since 2011, when he was with the Philadelphia Eagles. The seven-year pro received a healthy amount of cricism and ridicule after calling the Eagles a 'dream team', which turned bad for Young as he appeared in six games, managing just 866 yards passing while throwing 4 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

It's a low-risk move for Green Bay, who are in need of another quarterback to backup Aaron Rodgers. Currently Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman are vying for the job, but neither has done enough to stand out, with the two splitting reps in training camp.

Young's best season came in 2010 in a limited basis, when he threw for 10 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions in nine games. Once believed to be the Tennessee Titans' franchise quarterback, a rift emerged between then-head coach Jeff Fisher and the Titans' front office, one that ultimately cost Fisher his job, and saw Young jettisoned in the offseason.

It's likely Young will assist in running read option plays, in addition to battling for a backup job. Green Bay's defense was unable to contend with the offense in the 2012 playoffs, and have a regular season slate featuring Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers to open the season on September 8.
