Mike McCarthy hopes Bryan Bulaga can play in 2013

Bryan Bulaga has a torn ACL, which normally means curtains for a player’s season. Mike McCarthy is still hoping he can play in 2013, though.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy isn't ready to rule out offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga for the season. Despite reports that Bulaga tore his ACL, McCarthy is still waiting on a second opinion and says Bulaga wants to play in 2013. From the Packers' website:

“We’re still waiting on a medical opinion. Bryan is still hopeful of giving it a go. Nothing has been finalized. He doesn’t even look like he’s injured,” McCarthy told reporters following the Packers’ Tuesday morning practice.

“We always do what’s in the best interest of the player. Bryan is fully aware of what it would take to play this season.”

It's true that ACL tears aren't the career-ending injury they used to be -- Robert Griffin III suffered a similar injury in January and is already close to 100 percent just seven months later. Even with that best-case timetable, however, Bulaga may not be ready for football activities until next spring.

Fourth-round rookie David Bakhtiari will get the first chance to take Bulaga's spot on the line. It's unknown if he will play at left tackle or moves to the right side while Marshall Newhouse shifts back over to the blindside.
