Rex Ryan ‘confident’ Santonio Holmes will be ready for Week 1

Despite Holmes reportedly telling friends he would likely miss the first four games of the season, the Jets are optimistic their No. 1 wideout will be ready for the season opener.

Santonio Holmes' recovery from a Lisfranc fracture has been a long and slow process, but the Jets' No. 1 receiver could still return for the start of the season. New York head coach Rex Ryan said he was "confident" Holmes would be active for the season opener, according to Seth Walder of the New York Daily News.

“I’m confident that Santonio will be ready to go,” Ryan said, via Walder. “He’s in great shape. He’s doing everything but (being) out there playing. He’s running. He’s training.”

During an appearance on ESPN’s NFL Insiders, Adam Schefter reported the “feeling” is Holmes would return closer to the start of the regular season, rather than missing four games, according to Rotoworld. The latest reports come a day after the New York Post reported Holmes told friends he expects to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.

As for now, Holmes remains on the physically unable to perform list. While he’s begun running and training, he’s yet to receive clearance to return to practice. Holmes suffered the foot injury in Week 4 of last season and missed the final 12 games.
