Saints lose Kenyon Coleman, Joe Morgan for season

With preseason football just getting started, New Orleans got some bad news about two players who were expected to play important roles this year.

The New Orleans Saints got difficult news on Wednesday with reports that veteran defensive end Kenyon Coleman and young receiver Joe Morgan are both going to be placed on injured reserve and be out for the season. Morgan has a torn meniscus and partially torn ACL, while Coleman has a torn pectoral.

The Saints signed the 34-year-old Coleman in free agency this year after he spent the last two seasons with the Cowboys. Coleman played in seven games last year before being lost for the year with a torn triceps. He has spent 11 years in the league as a run-stuffing defensive end specialist, playing for the Raiders, Jets, Browns and two stints with the Cowboys. Head coach Sean Payton confirms that Coleman is out for the year, per Adam Schefter.

Morgan, a 2011 undrafted free agent out of Walsh, made some big plays for New Orleans last year, and many fans were hoping for a further breakthrough this season. He gained 379 yards on only 10 catches last year, including an 80-yard touchdown against the Green Bay Packers in Week 4.

It looked like he had a good opportunity to step up as the third receiver this year following the departure of Devery Henderson in free agency, but those plans will likely now be on hold until next season.
