Mike Wallace injury: Dolphins WR returns to practice

Miami gave Wallace a big free agent deal in the offseason, but he has already missed one preseason game due to injury. The Dolphins were likely elated to see him back on the field Wednesday.

USA TODAY Sports

Dolphins receiver Mike Wallace (groin) returned to practice on Wednesday. Miami's marquee free agent signing has been sidelined for the past few days with the injury, which caused him to miss the Dolphins' preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Miami is hopeful that Wallace, 27, can remain healthy after signing him to a five-year, $60 million contract in the offseason, bolstering an offense that finished 27th in the NFL in scoring last year. Wallace, a third-round pick in 2009, caught 64 passes for 836 yards and eight touchdowns last year with the Steelers.

He missed Pittsburgh’s final game of the 2012 season, the first time in his four-year career that he didn’t suit up.

Wallace is expected to start opposite of Brian Hartline, giving Ryan Tannehill the deep-threat weapon that he did not have during his rookie season in 2012. The Ole Miss product has 32 touchdown receptions in just 63 career games.
