Mike Vick will start Eagles’ 1st preseason game, Chip Kelly confirms

Philadelphia has its starter for the preseason opener in Mike Vick, while Nick Foles will get his opportunity the following week.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Eagles have spent all of training camp without a clear-cut favorite for the starting quarterback position, but head coach Chip Kelly has named Michael Vick as the starter for Philadelphia in the team's first preseason game. Vick will start for the Eagles on Friday against the New England Patriots, though Kelly also noted that Vick and second-year pro Nick Foles will alternate reps with the first team offense in the first quarter of the game.

Foles will start Philadelphia's second preseason game against the Panthers on Aug. 15. So it appears that even though Vick will get the first start, Kelly has made it clear that neither is the favorite at the moment, and there likely still won't be a favorite after Friday's opener.

Vick, 33, made 10 starts for the Eagles last year and completed 58.1 percent of his passes for 2,362 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, with the team going 3-7 in those games. Foles made six starts and completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 1,699 yards, six touchdowns, five interceptions, and the team went 1-5.

Kelly has been adamant that neither QB has done enough to separate himself from the other. Rookie Matt Barkley has exclusively worked with the third-team offense.
