Seahawks vs. Chargers: San Diego fans remember ‘preseason games don’t matter’

San Diego’s first-stringers looked alright, and their backups let the squad’s first preseason game get out of hand. Nothing to get too beat up about, unless you’re a Chargers defensive back hoping to make the roster.

It was the first game of the Mike McCoy era, and ... well ... it didn’t go too well for the San Diego Chargers, as they lost their preseason debut, 31-10, to the Seattle Seahawks.

Of course, it’s important to take it with a grain of salt. The first units for each team traded little, with the score 3-0 in favor of San Diego after the first quarter, and the only touchdown of the first half came from Seahawks backup Brady Quinn. The real damage was done in the second half, as Seattle outscored San Diego, 24-7, with third-stringer Tarvaris Jackson tossing two fourth-quarter TDs.

Before getting into more serious analysis, John Gennaro at Bolts from the Blue made sure not to take it overly seriously.

Ah, whatever. Preseason games don’t matter. The Ryan Leaf Chargers went 4-0 in the preseason at least once. I think the 14-2 Chargers of 2006 went 0-4 in the preseason. None of this matters.

If anything, the Chargers’ first unit should get a pat on the back. Philip Rivers was 5-for-6 passing, and Ryan Mathews had 19 yards on just three carries, while the team held spark plug Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson to 2-for-6 passing. But backup QB Charlie Whitehurst threw two picks, and Gennaro was not impressed with what he saw from the backup defenders:

The defense is really going to struggle. They have the talent at the top to compete early in the year, but no depth at all. They will struggle to stop anyone after the first few injuries, I think.

McCoy and the Chargers will head to Chicago to face another team with a first-time NFL head coach, taking on Marc Trestman’s Bears next Thursday.More from SB Nation:
