Plaxico Burress injury: Coach Mike Tomlin confirms WR’s injured shoulder, surgery

The veteran receiver is set for surgery on his shoulder next week, and he may be done for the year.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport

Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress reportedly tore a rotator cuff in practice on Thursday, and head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Friday that the setback is, as he put it, "significant." Burress is scheduled to have surgery on the shoulder Monday.

Burress apparently tried to make a catch over Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith and Ryan Steed, but ended up landing awkwardly on his right arm. He was then carted to the locker room and was later seen wearing a sling. Speculation suggests that this injury will put an end to Burress' season, and perhaps his career.

If Burress is done for the season, it's a significant blow to the Steelers' receiving corps, which is already adjusting to the departure of Mike Wallace during the offseason. Wallace led the team in receiving yards with 836 a year ago, but he signed a lucrative deal with Miami in March.

Burress wasn't necessarily expected to be a standout in 2013 -- he played in only four games for Pittsburgh last season -- but he provided some much-needed experience, and his absence will put added pressure on Antonio Brown, among others.
