Darren McFadden contract: Raiders reportedly have ‘checked in’ on extension with RB

Oakland approached McFadden about a new contract, but he wants to improve his value with a bounce-back season before beginning negotiations.

USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Raiders have spoken with Darren McFadden about a contract extension, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. It appears that McFadden prefers to play the 2013 season, however, and then figure out his next move when his deal expires next summer.

McFadden is entering a contract year, and the team has checked in with him about an extension. But McFadden wants to return to his old self and be in position to command big dollars after the season rather than talk now. The reality is, that scenario would be a win-win for both sides.

Head coach Dennis Allen said McFadden “never felt comfortable” in Oakland’s system last year, ultimately resulting in a poor season. The five-year veteran averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per carry and scored only two touchdowns on the ground en route to just four runs of 20 yards or more in 2012.

McFadden’s value is not at its peak right now and he clearly understands that, given his desire to prove his worth in 2013. Oakland brought in a new offensive coordinator during the offseason, and it’s evident that McFadden expects to benefit from this change. If he does thrive this season -- and stay healthy -- he will be in a position to ink a more lucrative contract, whether that’s with Oakland or another team.
