Alex Smith was sharp in his debut under center for Kansas City but the Chiefs fell to the New Orleans Saints on Friday night, 17-13. It was the first game for the Chiefs under head coach Andy Reid, who also saw his best rookie go down with an injury in the first half.
Chiefs vs. Saints 2013 results: New Orleans rallies for 17-13 victory
Andy Reid’s first game as Kansas City’s head coach didn’t end as he would have liked.

The top pick in the 2013 draft, tackle Eric Fisher, was taken to the locker for evaluation in the second quarter after being injured just before the two minute warning. The rookie tackle would later return to the sideline after X-rays on his injured thumb came back negative.
The Chiefs built a 10-3 lead thanks to a strong start by Smith and a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Jamaal Charles that capped off an 80-yard opening drive. Smith was 7-for-8 for 68 yards before giving way to Chase Daniel in the second quarter.
That lead wouldn't last. The Saints' offense may have started slowly, but it recovered in the second half, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter to claim the lead for good. Starting quarterback Drew Brees finished the night 7-for-10 for 65 yards. Luke McCown, who is attempting to solidify the backup job behind Brees, was 18-for-28 for 216 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Did they cover?
The Saints barely covered the spread with the four-point win.
