Mark Sanchez finished with a touchdown pass and an interception, Geno Smith injured his ankle and the New York Jets lost, 26-17, to the Detroit Lions on Friday night.
Jets vs. Lions final score: Detroit tops New York, 26-17
Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith was injured in his preseason debut.

Sanchez had an interception early in the game but was much sharper after, finishing 10-for-13, including a 26-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. The battle for the Jets’ starting quarterback job got off to an interesting start after Smith entered the contest and went 6-for-7 for 47 yards, but the rookie quarterback injured his ankle in the third quarter.
Matthew Stafford and the Lions' first-string offense started slow but the team held a 10-0 lead early in the game thanks in large part to the Ezekiel Ansah interception that got the scoring started. The Lions would continue to build on the lead, with backup quarterback Shaun Hill going 11-for-18 for 136 yards and a touchdown in the game.
Reggie Bush did not inspire much confidence in his Lions debut, rushing for just five yards on three carries in a game that was tough going for both teams' ground attacks. Despite passing for 293 yards in the contest, the Jets were forced to almost completely abandon the running game; they finished the night with 37 yards rushing.
