Mark Sanchez injury: Jets QB still experiencing shoulder pain

Sanchez has not resumed throwing since injuring his shoulder in the Jets third preseason game.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is still experiencing shoulder pain, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

Sanchez suffered a deep shoulder bruise in his throwing shoulder during the Jets third preseason game against the New York Giants. He missed the team's final preseason game and has not attempted to resume throwing as of Saturday.

The Jets are prepared to start rookie Geno Smith Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cimini states that it will be an "upset if Smith doesn't start." Ian Rapoport of NFL.com also reported Sanchez will be unavailable for the Jets season opener while Ed Werder of ESPN reports that Sanchez could miss "a few weeks."

Jets head coach Rex Ryan discussed the possibility of starting Smith with Cimini:

“He started out like gangbusters [in training camp] and, obviously, he had the ankle injury, so that set him back. [He] got the game in against the Giants. Obviously, it was a very up and down performance. He had a good week of practice. We’ll see where he is from there.”

If Sanchez is unable to dress for the season opener, Graham Harrell and Matt Simms will serve as Smith's backups.
