Jairus Byrd injury: Bills safety has plantar fasciitis

Jairus Byrd has a potentially nasty injury, as reports say that he’s been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis

Mark Konezny-US PRESSWIRE

Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd has been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It's unknown when he suffered the injury.

Rapoport indicates that Byrd will try to play through the injury, but recovery from plantar fasciitis varies from player to player. It’s a painful inflammation on the sole of the foot that can take months to recover from if not watched properly.

Chicago Bears defensive end Julius Peppers hobbled through the injury during last year's preseason, but he played all 16 games and recorded 11.5 sacks. In other sports, Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah battled the same injury in the second half of the 2012-13 season. Baseball star Albert Pujols sustained the injury at the end of 2012 and tried to play through it in 2013, but his foot never got better and his stats plummeted before the Angels shut him down in August.

In other words, there is no concrete timetable on Byrd’s recovery. For the Bills, the best-case scenario would be if he continues to produce at a high level while playing through the injury, but he could just as easily struggle as much as Noah and Pujols did. This news is an unwelcome development after Byrd held out through most of training camp and preseason. He will be a free agent in 2014 after being given the franchise tag by Buffalo.
