Shane Vereen injury: Patriots RB placed on injured reserve

Shane Vereen will be out at least eight weeks after landing on injured reserve with the designation to return.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

New England will be without running back Shane Vereen until at least Week 11 after the Patriots placed the running back in injured reserve with the designation to return.

Vereen fractured a small bone in his wrist during Sunday’s game against Buffalo and was forced to undergo surgery on Monday. The injury was expected to cause him to miss several weeks and instead of having him occupy a roster spot, New England moved him to injured reserve. With the designation to return, Vereen will miss a minimum of eight games. He’s eligible to return to practice following Week 7 and could return to the active roster in Week 10, but New England is on a bye. Instead, the first game Vereen would be eligible for is New England’s Week 11 contest against Carolina.

He played through the injury against Buffalo, racking up 159 yards from scrimmage. He'll be out for a few key games, including matchups against Atlanta, Cincinniati, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and division games against Miami and the New York Jets.

Without Vereen, Stevan Ridley will likely play a bigger role in the offense. Ridley was benched in Sunday's game after fumbling early.
