NFL picks and predictions 2013, Titans vs. Texans: Don’t take Tennessee ... unless it’s against the spread

Both the Titans and Texans won ugly in Week 1, but experts and oddsmakers clearly favor the home team in this week’s matchup in Houston.

Grant Halverson

The Tennessee Titans were downright pedestrian on offense against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Jake Locker passed for 125 yards, and Chris Johnson ran for 70 yards as the team managed just 229 yards of total offense. The defense managed to make the Steelers' offense look much worse, however, harassing Ben Roethlisberger into five sacks and an interception. The Steelers had just 195 total yards.

If Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers didn't suffer a predictable collapse Monday night, the Houston Texans would be 0-1 at the moment. Down 28-7 in the third quarter, the Texan reeled off 24 straight points to defeat the Chargers on the road. The final 10 points were scored on a Brian Cushing 18-yard pick-six and a Randy Bullock 41-yard field goal as time expired.

Given that both teams won ugly in Week 1, one might expect an even matchup when the Titans visit the Texans this Sunday. Only one of the two teams was considered a preseason Super Bowl contender, however. All 14 experts at ESPN and nine experts at CBS Sports predict that the Texans will be 2-0 after the weekend.

Evan Vegas is on the Texans’ bandwagon. Houston opened the week as 8.5-point favorites, according to Odds Shark, and the line has moved as high as 10.5 points at some sportsbooks. The odds are little too one-sided, according to the guys at CBS. Six of nine experts have the Titans covering the 8.5-point spread.
