Bill Belichick’s contract with the Patriots won’t expire in 2013

Bill Belichick has apparently signed a contract extension with the Patriots. And that’s all we know.

Kevin Hoffman-US PRESSWIRE

Bill Belichick's contract with the New England Patriots won't be expiring any time soon. When Belichick signed his renewal in 2007 his contract was set to expire after the 2013 season, but sources reportedly told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport that Belichick will be coaching in New England "for a long time." No other details of the contract extension -- length, salary or otherwise -- have been revealed.

Belichick is notoriously secretive about his finances, though he is apparently paid handsomely well. Sean Payton reportedly passed Belichick as the highest paid coach in American sports last May, even though no one knows exactly how much Belichick is paid. Belichick has worked out some kind of extension with the Patriots, but it’s unknown if/when the the front office will announce the deal as such. If Belichick has his way, his new contract will quietly become a non-story.

It's no surprise that the Patriots have locked down Belichick. The man has helmed the the franchise to five Super Bowl appearances and three rings in 13 seasons. His obsession with the game does not appear to be waning, and the Patriots remain a perennial playoff contender.

It's difficult to tell when Belichick might decide to retire. He has coached quarterback Tom Brady for so long that some speculate that the two will leave together at some point. Neither appears to be slowing down.
