Danny Amendola injury: Patriots WR return ‘impossible’ to predict

A report Thursday night said that Danny Amendola would miss up to six weeks with a groin injury. Now a source says there is no telling yet when the Patriots wide receiver will return.

Danny Amendola's return to the New England Patriots from a groin injury is still unclear. After NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that the wide receiver would miss up to six weeks, a source with knowledge of situation told Pro Football Talk that placing any sort of timetable for Amendola's return is "impossible" at this point.

Amendola has had injury problems throughout his career, but the Patriots were no doubt counting on the wideout lasting more than one game before being forced to the sideline. His potential impact when healthy was seen in Week 1, when he had 10 catches for 104 yards on a team-high 14 targets against the Buffalo Bills. His absence was palpable Thursday night, when rookie wide receivers Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins dropped multiple passes during the Pats' ugly 13-10 win over the New York Jets.

With Shane Vereen on short-term injured reserve, the Patriots will have to carry Amendola on the roster if they have hopes of playing him this season. Expect him to be listed as doubtful, or questionable at best, on injury reports for the next few weeks. He should be a regular on the Pats’ inactive lists.

The Patriots, meanwhile, will make do with Julian Edelman, Dobson and Thompkins. Ideally, the team will receive Rob Gronkowski back from injury soon, though his timetable is also murky.
