Dashon Goldson fined $30,000 for hit on Jeff Cumberland

Dashon Goldson was slapped with a major fine for the big hit he put on Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland last Sunday.

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

Dashon Goldson has been fined $30,000 for the hit he put on New York Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' season-opening loss. The fine was for hitting a defenseless player in the neck and the head, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Goldson was flagged for a personal foul on the play, and Cumberland was forced to leave the game to get stitches on his chin.

This fine isn't the first time Goldson has been docked pay for illegal play. As a member of the San Francisco 49ers, he was docked $7,875 for taunting the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7 of last year and then $21,000 for a helmet-to-helmet collision with Aaron Hernandez against the New England Patriots in Week 15.

Goldson was acquired by the Buccaneers during the offseason as part of a concerted effort to shore up a weak secondary. The unit did a good job in Week 1, holding a rookie Geno Smith to 24-for-38 passing for 256 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Bucs' Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints should be a stiffer challenge, however.
