NFL news roundup: Prince Amukamara cleared, Clay Matthews fined

Injuries and fines were the major stories on Friday in the NFL.

Thearon W. Henderson

It didn't take long for Danny Amendola to suffer an injury. After signing a free agent contract with the New England Patriots this offseason, Amendola injured his groin. He missed New England's Week 2 win against the New York Jets on Thursday night, and initial reports stated that he could miss up to six weeks.

According to Pro Football Talk, however, a timetable for Amendola's return is impossible to predict. Amendola's injury is not good news for the Patriots considering that Tom Brady was visibly frustrated with his receivers on Thursday night and is still without tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Prince Amukamara cleared to play against Broncos

New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara has been cleared after suffering a concussion in his team's opening-week loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Amukamara collided with a teammate during the game and didn't return to practice until Friday. He is listed as questionable on the Giants' injury report, but will reportedly play on Sunday against the Broncos.

Dashon Goldson fined for hit on Cumberland

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson has been fined $30,000 by the league for his hit on New York Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland in the Bucs' Week 1 loss. Cumberland was forced to leave the game to get stitches on his chin as a result of the hit.

This incident marks the third time Goldson has been fined for a hit in the last two seasons.

Clay Matthews fined for late hit on Colin Kaepernick

Clay Matthews' late hit on Colin Kaepernick in Week 1 sparked a brawl between the 49ers and Packers, resulting in league-wide speculation over whether Matthews would face penalty from the league office. Well, on Friday, Matthew was handed a $15,000 fine from the league. The fine is far from the largest handed out after the first week of games, though, so further scrutiny may still be coming.
