NFL roundup: Vick Ballard to IR, Jamaal Charles expected to play

Indianapolis Colts running back Vick Ballard was placed on injured reserve, Jamaal Charles says he’s ready to play and more you may have missed from Friday.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Indianapolis Colts running back Vick Ballard was placed on injured reserve on Friday after suffering a "freak" injury in practice on Thursday. Ballard suffered an ACL tear in his right knee while planting his foot in practice, and there was no contact involved. Ballard won't see the field until next season, which means Ahmad Bradshaw will take over as the primary back with Donald Brown likely getting some relief carries of his own.

Here’s what else you might have missed from Friday:

Charles expected to play against Dallas

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is expected to play against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. Charles said that he is "ready to go," though he neglected to say that he was 100 percent. Charles suffered a quad contusion in the third quarter of the opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. He left the game briefly, returned for a couple snaps and then sat out the remainder of the game. He's been practicing in a limited fashion this week.

Belichick extended ... maybe ... at some point

It was originally thought that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick would be facing an expiring contract after the 2013 season, but reports on Friday suggested that Belichick has signed an extension. Truthfully, the extension could have been signed at any point, and the only information we have at this point is that Belichick will be coaching in New England "for a long time." So there's that.

Goldson fined $30,000

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson was fined $30,000 for the hit he put on New York Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland in Week 1. Goldson's fine is officially for hitting a defenseless player in the neck and the head. For the play, Goldson also drew a personal foul, while Cumberland was injured and had to leave the game. It's the third fine of this kind for Goldson, hence the high dollar amount.

Matthews fined $15,000

Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was fined $15,000 for a late hit on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the Week 1 opener. Matthews clearly hit Kaepernick out of bounds, and a scuffle between the two teams ensued on the sidelines. Most importantly, Matthews' hit gave the 49ers another shot at a touchdown, which they were able to convert on. San Francisco won the game.

Amukamara cleared to play

New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara was cleared to return to football activities on Friday. Amukamara suffered a concussion against the Dallas Cowboys in the opener. He was officially listed as questionable on the team's Friday injury report, but head coach Tom Coughlin said he expects Amukamara on the field against the Denver Broncos, provided there are no setbacks.

Amendola’s return projections all over the place

New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola will probably be back from his groin injury at some point this season ... but nobody really knows when. Amendola has had significant injury issues throughout his career, and while some have been giving figures from three to six weeks, a report on Friday indicated that it's "impossible" to tell when Amendola will be able to return. His loss has been felt on the field as rookie receivers Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins both suffered from a bad case of the drops in Week 2.
