NFL injury roundup: Larry Fitzgerald questionable, Vick Ballard to IR and more

Larry Fitzgerald is questionable for Week 2, Vick Ballard was placed on injured reserve, plus other injury news from Friday.

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is officially questionable for the team's Week 2 game against the Detroit Lions. Fitzgerald injured his hamstring in practice on Wednesday, and it would be a big loss for Arizona if he's unable to go. It sounds like Fitzgerald will end up being a game-time decision, but it's clear the veteran receiver wants to get out there and play.

Here’s some other injury news from Friday:

Ballard to IR

Indianapolis Colts running back Vick Vallard was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Friday. Ballard suffered a "freak" injury in practice on Thursday, and tore the ACL in his right knee. It's a tough break for the second-year player, who won't see the field again until next year. Ahmad Bradshaw will take over behind him.

Amendola’s return “impossible” to predict

Danny Amendola could be out six weeks, he could be out longer or ... who knows? There have been conflicting reports regarding the New England Patriots receiver, but on Friday, one report suggested that it's "impossible" to tell when Amendola will return at this point. Amendola is currently dealing with a groin injury, and Tom Brady is definitely missing his presence on the field.

Ryan says Sanchez could play this season

Among all of the pertinent Week 2 injury news we got on Friday was this gem: New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan says that quarterback Mark Sanchez could return this season. Ryan says that the team would just place Sanchez on injured reserve if there wasn't a chance of him playing this season. Now, whether or not he'll be able to take the starting job from Geno Smith when he gets back is another matter entirely.

’Hawks have good and bad news

The Seattle Seahwks have an incredibly important Week 2 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, but not all the injury news they put out on Friday is good. On one hand, defensive end Cliff Avril is "ready to go" and should be all systems go against the 49ers, but cornerback Brandon Browner is still dealing with a hamstring injury and is doubtful to play. On top of that, Chris Clemons is questionable, and it would be surprising to see him come back so fast, as well.

Charles will play in Week 2

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles says he'll play in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. Charles neglected to say that he was 100 percent, but he did say that he's going to play. Charles injured his quad in the third quarter of the team's opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Falcons have question marks

There are some big names on the Atlanta Falcons' Friday injury report. The biggest is Roddy White, who is listed as questionable. White played in the team's first game, but he was used more as a decoy to keep bracket coverage off of fellow receiver Julio Jones and tight end Tony Gonzalez. He'll probably play on Sunday, but in what role? Then there's Asante Samuel, who is sorely missed. He's also questionable for Sunday.

Fairley, Bush on Detroit injury list

Two prominent players were on the Detroit Lions injury report Friday: running back Reggie Bush and defensive tackle Nick Fairley. Bush is listed as probable with his injuries, and is expected to play. He could be limited, however. Fairley is listed as questionable after practicing for the first time this week on Friday. He missed both Wednesday and Thursday practices with a shoulder injury, but is expected to get some snaps against the Cardinals.
