Mark Sanchez injury: Jets QB placed on Injured Reserve

The Jets quarterback will be eligible to return in eight weeks.

The New York Jets have placed quarterback Mark Sanchez on Injured Reserve, Designated for Return, the team announced on Saturday morning.

Sanchez was injured in the preseason when he entered the Giants game in the third quarter, playing with second- and third-team players, and suffered a shoulder injury on his throwing arm. The Jets have not been forthcoming as to the extent and exact nature of the injury, although Rex Ryan stated this week there was a realistic chance that Sanchez would return to play in 2013.

The veteran quarterback was locked into a battle with Geno Smith for the starting spot and had outperformed the rookie through three games of the preseason. Smith started in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and led the team to a last-second field goal victory before imploding on Thursday Night Football against the New England Patriots in a 13-10 loss.

Sanchez will be eligible to return to practice in six weeks and will be able to play in a game eight weeks after having been placed on Injured Reserve.
