Brandon Meriweather injury: Redskins safety will return vs. Packers

Brandon Meriweather is back from a groin injury and will make his season debut on Sunday.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Redskins strong safety Brandon Meriweather will make his season debut against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Meriweather missed the season opener with a groin injury, but he got a full week of practice and should be ready to go on Sunday. E.J. Biggers started on Monday and struggled in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Meriweather's 2012 season was derailed by knee injuries. He missed the first nine games after a preseason knee sprain and lasted just one game before a torn ACL ended his season. He has played in just 13 games the past two seasons. Meriweather last played a full 16 games in 2010, when he recorded 69 tackles, three interceptions and six passes defended for the New England Patriots.

The Redskins declared Jordan Pugh and Jose Gumbs inactive for Sunday's game, so Meriweather will be the only strong safety active against the Packers. It should be an indication that the Redskins are confident in his health.
