Josh Freeman struggles in 1st half, Buccaneers QB controversy persists

Could Greg Schiano finally have a reason to bench Freeman after a horrendous start against the Saints?

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The drama in Tampa Bay surrounding quarterback Josh Freeman and head coach Greg Schiano reached new highs (or lows, depending on how you look at it) this week and news surfaced Sunday morning that Freeman may seek a trade. After Sunday's performance in the first half against the Saints, Schiano may be happy to comply.

Freeman is 5-of-11 for 31 yards and one touchdown against New Orleans as the Bucs trail, 10-7, at the half.

Reports earlier this week suggested that the Bucs held a players-only meeting to discuss a vote for team captain that didn’t result in Freeman getting one of the nods. He had been a team captain for every season except his rookie year, but lost out in the vote this year. Some believed that Schiano rigged the vote so that Freeman wouldn’t be honored as a captain because they don’t believe he is a fan of Freeman’s play.

Schiano denied any such wrongdoing, but the relationship is obviously torn. The Bucs drafted quarterback Mike Glennon in April and Sunday's game against the Saints may be the rookie's best opportunity to play and possibly give Schiano enough reasoning to keep Glennon as the starter moving forward.

If Freeman doesn’t improve on his 2.8 yards per pass attempt, he won’t have much excuse as to why he should stay in.
