Mike Shanahan remains confident in RGIII, will not start Kirk Cousins

Robert Griffin III will remain the quarterback for the Redskins, Mike Shanahan said on Monday.

The Washington Redskins are off to a rough start, but head coach Mike Shanahan isn't planning on benching quarterback Robert Griffin III any time soon. At his Monday press conference, Shanahan brushed off questions about the possibility of Kirk Cousins seeing play time and reiterated, "We've got a lot of confidence in Robert."

Through two games, Griffin has compiled 649 yards passing, five touchdowns and three interceptions as the Redskins have earned an 0-2 record to start. While questions about Griffin’s health have been raised, Shanahan assured the media that he would not be playing if he was not healthy.

“We’ve got the ability to do everything,” Shanahan said. “We’ll let the season go on. Hopefully you will see some of the execution.”

The Redskins fell behind the Green Bay Packers, 31-0, on Sunday before beginning to rally when the game was already out of hand. It was a similar story in Week 1, when the Redskins fell in a 33-7 hole before rallying with the final 20 points of the game.

Griffin earned the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award and a Pro Bowl selection for his performance in 2012.
