NFL injuries 2013 AFC East: Danny Amendola returns to practice in limited fashion

Danny Amendola limped through practice on Monday. Could he return sooner than expected?

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Reports initially indicated Danny Amendola was likely to miss several weeks due to a serious groin injury. He returned to practice on Monday after just one week away, but his participation may not indicate he’s very close to playing in a game anytime soon.

That and more injury news from around the AFC East.

Buffalo Bills:

Rookie kicker Dustin Hopkins missed the first two games of the season due to a groin injury. He took the next step in working his way back, kicking foam footballs at practice on Monday, according to Chris Brown of the team website.

Marcell Dareus left Sunday's game briefly after going down on a chop block. He returned later in the game and said the injury wasn't anything serious and more of a scare.

The status of Jairus Byrd remains up in the air. The All-Pro safety missed the first two games due to plantar fascitis. He was a limited participant in practice last week and his status for Week 3 will likely be decided later in the week after the team sees how much he is able to participate in practice.

Miami Dolphins:

The Dolphins are in good shape on the injury front through two games. Cornerback Dimitri Patterson was able to play in Week 2 despite a groin injury that limited him leading up to the game. Third string quarterback Pat Devlin was inactive in Week 2 due to an ankle injury, but he was likely to be inactive even if healthy.

New England Patriots:

After missing Week 2 with a groin injury, Amendola took part in Monday's practice, although he was still obviously limited, according to reports. Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald wrote Amendola gingerly ran through drills, running slowly and limping back to the line. According to Howe, Amendola was barely able to run over bags on the field during agility drills.

Cornerback Aqib Talib and special teams ace Matthew Slater sat out. According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, Slater has a broken bone in his hand and his status is in question. Talib's status is unknown, although he did take a low hit late in Thursday's game against New York.

New York Jets:

The Jets got some good news on the injury front on Monday with Muhammad Wilkerson, Jeremy Kerley and Quinton Coples returning to practice, according to ESPN. Wilkerson injured his ankle against New England, but appears to have avoided a serious injury. Coples is working his way back from an ankle injury he suffered during the preseason while Kerley missed Week 2 with a concussion.

According to Seth Walder, Kerley hasn’t been cleared by the team, but said he’ll play in Week 3. He wore a red non-contact jersey on Monday.

Coples did some work on the side and head coach Rex Ryan said he wasn’t sure when Coples would be able to return, but the second-year defensive end was doing an “unbelievable job in his rehab.”
