Dashon Goldson suspension: Buccaneers safety to miss Week 3 for hit

Tampa Bay will be without Dashon Goldson in Week 3 after he was suspended one game by the NFL.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL suspended Tampa Bay safety Dashon Goldson for one game due to a "flagrant and repeat violation of NFL safety rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players."

The suspension comes after Goldson was flagged for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet hit against Darren Sproles in the second quarter of Sunday's game against New Orleans. Goldson was fined $30,000 last week for striking a defenseless player in the head and neck area in Week 1. According to the release from the NFL, the hit against Sproles was the fifth time Goldson has been penalized for unnecessary roughness since 2011.

Merton Hanks, the NFL vice president of football operations, imposed the suspension. In the letter notifying Goldson, Hanks said the Tampa Bay safety clearly lowered his head and unnecessarily hit Sproles in the head. The notice also said Goldson made no attempt to wrap up Sproles or make a conventional tackle, and the illegal contact could have been avoided.

Goldson will have the opportunity to appeal the suspension. If the ban stands, he will miss Tampa Bay’s upcoming game against New England.
