Heath Miller injury: Steelers TE has ‘a chance’ to play in Week 3

Heath Miller is getting closer to returning and could play next week.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers were forced to play without tight end Heath Miller on Monday against Cincinnati, but Pittsburgh may not have to wait much longer for Miller to return. During ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcast, announcers Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden said Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin told them there was a chance Miller would be able to return in Week 3.

Miller tore his ACL, MCL and PCL in Week 16 of last season. He had surgery shortly after and is approaching the nine-month mark of his recovery. He made consistent progress during the offseason and was close enough to returning that Pittsburgh activated him from the physically unable to perform list prior to the start of the regular season. If Miller had stayed on the PUP list to open the year, he would have missed at least the first six games of the season.

He returned to practice prior to the season opener and has been a limited participant in practice during the first two weeks. He did mostly individual work two weeks ago before taking part in some team work leading up to Week 2, according to Trib Live.

If Miller is not able to return in the next two weeks, he could return in Week 6 following Pittsburgh’s bye week in Week 5.
