Brandon Weeden sits for Brian Hoyer

The Browns have decided to sit Weeden in Week 3 as he nurses a sprained thumb in favor of Brian Hoyer.

Eric P. Mull-US PRESSWIRE

The Cleveland Browns have decided to bench quarterback Brandon Weeden for their Week 3 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, instead going with longtime backup Brian Hoyer, according to the Browns official twitter page.

Weeden has a sprained thumb that he suffered last Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, and the severity of the injury is still unknown. Whether Weeden can't play is not known, but what is known is that he will not be playing, or at least starting.

The second-year quarterback has been largely ineffective over the first two games of the season, leading to an 0-2 start in new head coach Rob Chudzinski's first year at the helm. It's surprising that Jason Campbell is not the quarterback getting the start here, but Chudzinski apparently sees something in Hoyer, who spent most of his career behind New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Hoyer, 27, spent the first three seasons of his career in New England, completing 27 of 43 passes in that span for 286 yards. Last year, Hoyer moved on to the Arizona Cardinals and appeared in two games, throwing for 330 yards.
