Dashon Goldson suspension overturned by NFL after appeal

The Buccaneers safety has won his appeal after being suspended for an illegal hit in Week 2.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL has apparently changed its mind in regards to the one-game suspension of Dashon Goldson, who was disciplined earlier this week for an illegal hit.

The league has overturned the suspension after an appeals process, clearing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety to return to this week's game against the New England Patriots, according to Adam Schefter.

Goldson's initial suspension was handed down after he made an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit on Saints halfback Darren Sproles during the second quarter of last Sunday's game against New Orleans, a violation deemed "flagrant and repeat" by the league. Just a week earlier, the seven-year pro had been fined $30,000 for a similar hit against the Jets. Goldson's hit against Sproles marked the fifth time since 2011 that he had been flagged for unnecessary roughness.

Goldson's unexpected return to the Bucs' secondary is a big break for a team that has ranked in the bottom half of the league in pass defense through the first two weeks, and who will face off against the always-dangerous Tom Brady on Sunday.
